Music Video Theorists

Before we actually completed our music video we had to research a few theorists in order to see what we had to do in order to create a music video which would work. We looked in Sven E Carlsson, here is a spider diagram I created presenting his ideas about a music video.

Video Feedback

During the duration of the filming process we were always getting feedback from our target audience and our classmates. During Wednesday 24th March lesson we presented our music video to our class, this was their feedback.

"Like the story, although the narrative doesn't match the lyrics it still works very well with the song"
"Good cuts between scenes of emotion and the scenes of singing"

"Good cuts on the music and the plot, managed to get the timing with the music and the vocalists singing voice and cut with the sound on the acting scenes"

"Good use of all our shots taken, good variety of camera angles used"

However, there was a piece of criticism; it was that we included a medium shot which zoomed out showing alcohol. We included this in our video but it was used as an instalment to show that our character was upset there was no intention of advertising which our class and teacher thought it might have been so we will be removing that shot I believe. But that was the only criticism we received.

Music Video Theory

As well as creating a music video we have had to research on how to market our video properly, look at theories including; Sven E. Carlsson and Andrew Goodwin. We looked at these to help us come to a conclusion on how to film our video properly and how to keep our target audience interested. We created a spider diagram with our research and a background on how music videos are created and a description of our Music video. See below:

Feedback on our video far

We have so far completed 2.41 minutes and are receiving feedback from our target audience, this is what they had to say:

Robyn- "Flowed well with the song, is at a good standard currently"
"Entertaining didn't lose interest in the story"
"Could do with some more transitions"

Marco- "Really good, good use of camera angles as there are a variety of them used from, panning, close ups, medium shots, long shots and powerful shots".
"Maybe an adjustment could be to make a few of the shots shorter as some of them are long"

Aileen- "Enjoyed the way in which the video flowed, had good timing with story"

Lois- "Despite the story's narrative being different the story being used works well with the song and flows"

We have looked at the criticism and the praise and are taking our target audience's opinions into consideration as their opinion is vital.

Today's Work

Today in our lesson we began editing all of our footage from the video camera. It was a successful day because we managed to get over a minutes worth of footage completed in time with our singers EP song being played over our actors. However, there were problems as well because it is a challenging task trying to align the live music being played which we recorded and Tom Craven's studio recorded song but despite this we managed to get a good amount of work completed.

Music Video Update

We have recorded the music performance of our two singers playing our choice of song, 'I Fell for you'. We are using the computer program 'imovie' on the Apple Macs. We are recording the rest of our music video later this week which  involves the performance of the actors, this will allow us to then finish editing and put the video together and get our final piece.

We decided to design a Magazine Advertisement, I chose to use the program of Adobe Illustrator as the designer. This is going to be used as a way of promoting our bands music and debut album, but mainly the song which is being sung in the music video; "I Fell For You".
The picture used in the artwork was taken by us and is a good picture to be used for our type of song because the song is emotive and so the type of artwork we have chosen works well. The name of the album as well ' There's always two sides to a story '. We used this because it works with the story line as it is about a boy and a girl relationship issue. I made sure I showed off the name of song so our audience would then know what song we would be showing in the music video.
I also used words such as ' Breathtaking', 'Inspirational' and 'Blockbuster'. I chose these because they show off the band and give them a good reputation because its had good reviews.
I also made sure that I gave a reasonable price when advertising it and made sure that it was shown well, so I used a big star with a 'Black' background, a ''Yellow' filling and a 'Red' price this was to make sure I stuck to the colour scheme but to also make it stand out to the audience reading the magazine advertisement.
Finally, I used a Large 'OUT NOW' to advertise it and and to also let the audience know that the album is now on sale and that they can go out and buy it.

CD Advertisement

We were asked to design a CD Magazine advertisement. I created this draft as a foundation to my advertisement. The cover is showing the CD Artwork which is showing the lead singer posing with a microphone. I used this to advertise the duo, I also used exciting words in a font which would grab the readers attention when they are reading the magazine. I then used in a 'LARGE' font 'OUT NOW'- this would be used in order to promote the duets EP and album. I finally released a reasonable price in the corner of the CD cover which would seem ideal.

As this is the foundation of my CD Advertisement, there will be an upgrade and many improvements made using computer technology programs such as; Illustrator and Photoshop.

We created a storyboard showing the storyline of our music video on seperate pages. It is also giving a briefing about how we are going to create the video e.g. what camera movement(panning, tracking), the props we will be using, the location etc. The storyline is of a boy and a girl who have had an argument; the song will be emotional and the type of song we are using will represent that. The story consists of an argument, which then leads to both charcters reconsidering and the video will consist of both characters running back to each other, we will be using tracking camera movement and a variety of camera angles as way to show emotion and passion of the characters. Throughout the video there are cut shots to the band playing the music.

Magazine CD Analysis

Magazines are used to promote Bands on a weekly basis because they're going on tours, creating a new album etc. I chose Kerrang as a magazine to analyse because as a Music based magazine it promotes new bands and experienced bands all the time. I feel that analysing the magazine has taught me how to express a band in way which will seem persuasive enough to read. My analysis is above:
