Artwork Analysis continued...

The final piece of artwork we viewed was 'My Chemical Romance' who are a band which play similar music to our genre we have chosen, we found this piece to useful as well because it's a CD cover which has lots of connotations and is a good example of what our artwork could look like as we are using a similar storyline.

Artwork Analysis

We continued our research into our bands type of artwork by looking into other genres and the differences between them, here is Avenged Sevenfold:

This gave us an insight to what a metal band would use as their artwork cover.

We decided that if we are going to design a good CD artwork, we need to research into what other bands have used and done, here is our analysis:

Rise Against's Album cover gave us a lot of info
on what the genre we are using because it offered a wide range of specific details which we can use.

Analysing a Music Video. Boys Like Girls- The Great Escape

Genre- Punk Pop, Emo and Rock.

Narrative- The story of the song "The Great Escape" is about two groups of teenagers, one being a punk band doing a set of gigs and the other being a group of girls who want to make an escape from for a weekend. You assume that they have used a group of teenagers because they are aiming their music at the teenager area as their target audience. The story continues with the two groups eventually meeting and in the end of the video the two groups move off into the distance eventually distinguishing the name of the song "The Great Escape".

Target Audience- The target audience 'Boys Like Girls' are aiming at is the years of teenagers and the stereotype being the 'Punk, Emo look' because they are the groups that are most likely to listen to and by their album.

Unique Selling Point- In my opinion the main selling point is that they use a group of teenagers similar to their target audience in order to get their audiences attention.

Shot Types/Camera Angles- There are a variety of shots in the music video I watched ranging from 'Long Shots' to 'Close ups' even to the moving camera angle. This shows the variety put into the music video. I also think that they chose a wide range of camera angles which were at pace sometimes because of the type of music; with it being a 'rock' band the music is generally faster which meant that the camera angles and shot types had to vary and be at a faster pace. The cameras also had to focus on the band members when they were playing, they aimed upwards at the lead singer which showed that he was powerful and was in control.

Pace- The pace in this genre of music much faster than other types of music such as classical or alternative genres, this makes the band and type of music more exciting and appealing to a younger age group.

Special Effects- There was several split screen shots during the video which showed both groups Boys and Girls having the same ideas of escaping and also doing similar activities, this showed that eventually you would see the two groups coming together. Another special effect would be that when the group of boys are doing a gig, it shows cuts back to the night before and shows what the lifestyle of being a 'Rockstar' is like and then cuts forward again, but keeps doing it during the video.

CD Artwork

CD Artwork
We are researching into CD artwork, what companies make them, where they make them and how they make them. We also researched why they are important to a musical artist. Examples of companies which make them are:

Some artists choose not to use a proffesional artwork designer but it is often that someone will come in and create a piece of artwork for the artist to go on the front cover of the CD. This is often seen as a vital part because good artwork can portray people’s decisions and reflect their album.

The artwork is designed and based around the type of music and on a computer program which specialises in creating musical artwork. They include:

Photoshop
QuarkXPress

Schedule

Week 1: Watching existing music videos and analysng them using applications like www.clevver.com/ & www.youtube.com/

Week 2: Reserching into various types of genres in the music industry so we have a variety of clips to analyse and make our final decision

Week 3: Researching into record labels and which ones similar bands choose e.g 20th Century Records.

Week 4: Researching into CD artworks and the designers of them for our genre of music, we will then analyse them.

Week 5: Storyboard of music video

Week 6: Choose an artist to play and sing and then search for actors to play parts in our video.
